It is a well-documented fact that loosening wheels are caused by a relaxing of the wheel assembly behind the nut resulting in reduced clamping force, rim movement, fretting of the assembly, and (if not identified early) eventual failure and detachment. Simply preventing the wheel nut from turning will not stop this event from happening, as the reduction of clamping force is taking place within the assembly, not the nut. There are numerous respected Forensic, Engineering and Government websites which analyse the loosening and detaching wheel issue In great detail. A commissioned report by the United Kingdom transport research laboratory has estimated that in the UK alone, 7500-11000 wheel fixing defects are recorded annually (considerably more go unreported).
45% due to failed wheel studs (due to fretting)
23% worn studs (due to fretting)
13% stripped threads
4% corroded studs
15% other defects
The consensus of opinion remains the same. Insufficient clamping force is the main reason wheel assemblies fail.
The only solution to a loosening wheel is early identification and resolution. The earlier the identification, the better the resolution. You cannot improve on loosening wheel identification by fitting non-indicating locking devices. No indication means a total reliance on fall back scheduled maintenance procedures which increase the chance of between service wheel failure or detachment. Indication and retention means opportunity to identify and resolve issues between service periods, which would otherwise be missed. This contributes to the increased efficiency and safety of the fleet. Based on years of wheel safety reports Redcat design and manufacture products which utilise critical indication as the core function, resulting in a much wider resolution safety window.
Fit our globally renowned Redcat visual indicators retainers to increase safety, reduce servicing costs and downtime.
IDENTIFY, RESTRAIN, RESOLVE
Visual indicators provide the ability for early identification of loosening wheels due to human error, stud fatigue stretch and hub wheel settling. Three of the most common reasons of loosening wheels.
The Early visual identification provided by loose nut indicators allows timely maintenance intervention, reducing expensive unscheduled maintenance and downtime.
NB – The use of REDCAT indicators assist in the pre-emptive identification of loosening wheels, they are not intended to replace or compromise recommended vehicle, wheel or hub manufacturer’s maintenance procedures, or operator maintenance structures. Redcat indicator/restrainers provide an increased safety window to allow for identification and resolution of pending wheel detachment. Redcat do not take responsibility for incorrect use or failure to adhere to advised manufacturers or operators maintenance procedures. Indicator restrainers temporarily extend the wheel safety window to allow for timely visual identification of pending damage or detachment. Indicator restrainers or other wheel safety products will not restrain a loose wheel indefinitely. Standard operator awareness of excessive wheel vibration, wobble or noise is still required to be acted upon. Overlooked or compromised inspections and or responses can ultimately result in wheel failure and or detachment.
